Real Relief Needed for Tourism Operators

As we all endure the impacts of the current crisis, it is crucial for the provincial government to help tourism businesses survive, says Liberal Tourism Critic Heath MacDonald.

“As we move through the long haul, we need to ensure the stability of the tourism industry – for that reason, I am calling on the Conservative government to provide commercial property tax relief for Island fixed roof accommodations.”

“Tourism and its eight sectors have become our second largest industry on PEI. While no industry has been left unaffected during the pandemic, many tourism operators will not survive another year with reduced occupancy. This government should follow Nova Scotia’s lead and offer property tax relief, not a deferral.”

In recent days, the Nova Scotia government announced commercial property tax relief for owners of hotels, motels and inns. The Tourism Accommodations Real Property Tax Rebate Program will provide Nova Scotia operators a 25 per cent rebate on payment of 2020-21 commercial property tax.

“We know that fixed roof accommodations have experienced significant drops in occupancy because of the decline in visitors due to COVID-19,” said MacDonald.
