Statement for the Liberal Caucus
Updated: 2 days ago
The Liberal Caucus was disappointed and concerned this week to learn that PEI table and seed producers would be losing access to the US market. The potato industry and its various spinoff industries widely contribute to the provincial economy and produces thousands of jobs. The potato industry represents more than just economic impact, it’s also a large part of our Island identity and reputation.
The Federal Government has maintained that this was the better of two terrible choices facing the country. While we don’t doubt their intentions of protecting the industry, there should have been better consultation and communication with Island farmers leading up to this decision.
Regardless of how the decision was made, we must now deal with the reality of this very important situation. Both levels of government must work together, alongside industry, to bring this situation to a resolution as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, the Federal and Provincial Government must work together to establish support programs and compensation packages to offset losses suffered by the industry as a result of this decision. Every day that passes without clarity and certainty, farmers are left to worry about the future of their operations.
