Charlottetown-West Royalty MLA Gord McNeilly Today Issued the Following Statement About Families Impacted by the Canada Games:
"The Canada Games are just a few weeks away and Islanders are looking forward to hosting thousands of athletes from hundreds of communities across the country.
"The games will be a great opportunity to showcase Islanders’ famed hospitality.
"Even though we welcome both the social and economic benefits of the games being held on PEI, I am concerned about the disruption of school for Island students and their families.
"While families plan and make arrangements for March break and Islander day, schools are closed an extra four days this year. This is all happening between Feb. 16 and March 5. As a result, some parents are having to take time off from work, or scramble for child-care arrangements during this period.
"The 2023 Canada Winter Games Host Society has made $1,500 available to UPEI students if they are able to vacate their residence rooms for athletes who need accommodation.
"I believe families who need child-care because schools are closed also deserve financial assistance and I’m calling on the King government to provide one-time assistance to these families.
"We want to ensure the games run smoothly and provide a lifetime opportunity for all athletes, their families and supporters, as well as all Islanders who will welcome our visitors and make their stay on PEI memorable."
