An apparent decision to ban cell phones during class time in schools is welcome - but may not go far enough, says Liberal Leader Hal Perry.
“The Liberals have been pushing for a ban - but I am concerned that government may be trying to dilute the measures that should be taken,” Perry said.
“I believe we need to start committee hearings into a ban very soon - to make sure we get this right.”
There are multiple studies available showing a strong cell phone ban improves attention during class time - and reduces bullying.
“I am worried that this government will take its usual half-measure and weak approaches to this major social and educational challenge. I think committee hearings will get us the input we need from parents, students and experts.”
On Monday, Perry sent a letter to the Standing Committee on Education to begin hearings. He has yet to hear back from the Chair, Brad Trivers. Last week, Perry also contacted the P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation and representatives Home and School Association to gather their input on the appropriate school cell phone ban during classroom time.
"Gathering input from these groups will be crucial for the committee's recommendation making process."
