Opposition Demands Immediate Answers on Electricity Crisis—No More Delays, No More Excuses

Charlottetown, PE – The Official Opposition is demanding immediate action from the provincial government as Islanders continue to face widespread power outages, warnings of rolling blackouts, and skyrocketing electricity bills.

The Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Action must appear before the Standing Committee on Natural Resources immediately to explain what is going on with PEI’s electricity system. The Leader of the Official Opposition has formally requested that the committee not accept any more delay tactics or excuses—Islanders deserve real answers.

“Maritime Electric is raking in $250 million a year while Islanders are paying nine percent more on their bills than they did last year. Meanwhile, thousands are left in the dark, and the government’s only response is vague talk of a government takeover with no clear plan or cost analysis,” said Perry, Leader of the Official Opposition.

“Enough is enough. The Minister must appear before the committee now.”

The Official Opposition is calling on the Minister to provide clear answers on:

  • What the government is doing to guarantee reliable power for Islanders.

  • Why Maritime Electric is increasing rates while failing to keep the lights on.

  • What oversight measures are in place to hold the company accountable.

  • What a government takeover would actually mean for taxpayers.

“This government can’t keep dodging accountability while Islanders suffer. It’s time for the Minister to step up and answer for this mess.”

The Official Opposition will not allow this crisis to be ignored. The committee must demand the Minister’s immediate appearance—no more stalling.
