In light of the government's fall fiscal update yesterday, it is disheartening to witness a
staggering $98.6 million deficit touted as a “success”. The apparent lack of common
sense displayed in this fiscal approach raises serious concerns. It is clear this
Government is financing their spending by ballooning the provincial debt and ensuring
future generations pay for their financial mismanagement.
As Islanders grapple with an escalating housing crisis, less money in their pockets, and
challenges in accessing essential health and social supports, one must question the
Minister of Finance's perception of success in this update.
The King Government’s priorities are misplaced, and the impact on the well-being of our
citizens is be ignored. Just look at the Rustico rink debacle. How can the government
justify a $20 million vanity project that the community can’t financially support? All the
while Islanders can’t access health care services, people are struggling to afford rent,
many can’t afford to buy a home and we are looking at a third possible electricity
increase in one year.
The disconnect between government priorities and the pressing needs of Islanders
raises serious questions about their commitment to addressing the real issues
impacting the province. Islanders deserve a government that is responsive to the
collective needs of all, and the fact is this government demonstrates a clear lack of
common sense.
