The Official Opposition expresses deep concern over the enduring impact of the recent oil spill in Charlottetown Harbour on shellfish resources and wildlife in the area. With 167 liters leaked from MV Ancier last week, contaminating both the harbour and upstream Hillsborough River, the waters crucial to the shellfish industry demand safeguarding.
While provincial environmental officers assure no immediate risk to shellfish, frozen oil in river ice poses an ongoing threat to the local shellfishery and ecosystem. We urge the King Government to guarantee protection for the local fishery, and stand ready to compensate affected fishers if this spill impedes their ability to work these waters.
